Gilmore Girls first aired in America on October 5th 2000. The series aired for seven seasons the last episode airing on May 15th 2007. The show is Centered around Single mother Lorelai Victora Gilmore (Lauran Graham) and her Teenage Daughter Lorelai Leigh Gilmore AKA Rory (Alexis Bedel). They live in the small town of Stars Hollow in New England Connecticut which is roughly 30 minutes outside of Hartford Connecticut.
The show has the tagline ‘Life’s short, Talk Fast’ This is because the show is known for its fast past dialogue and is littered with pop culture references. The show explores different aspects of Family, Friendship and Romance as well as generational divides and social class. Other aspects of the shows central concerns are Ambition, Education and Work. The show tells the story of the mother Lorelai getting pregnant as a teenager, becoming a high school drop out and running away from home to becoming a co-owner and manager of the DragonFly Inn. Rory’s story is about how she makes a transition from public school to prestigious preparatory school, Chilton. It also follows her ambition to attend Harvard University and become a foreign Correspondant. The show’s social commentary manifests most clearly in Lorelai’s difficult relationship with her wealthy upper-class parents, Emily and Richard Gilmore, and with Rory in the interaction between her and the students at Chilton, and later, Yale University.
Over the seven seasons, Lorelai and Rory both have a number of different love interests. However, I am going to tell you about the ones I believe are soul mates.
Lorelai and Luke: Thought out the seasons we have seen the relationship grow. In the final episode of season 4 we finally see the start of the romance we have all been waiting for.
LORELAI: [ Chuckles ] You okay? I heard Babette was kicking your butt at Yahtzee.
LUKE: Actually, I’m feeling pretty stupid right now.
LUKE: I’m not a mysterious man, am I?
LORELAI: Well, the wardrobe’s a bit of a head scratcher.
LUKE: I think I’ve been very, very clear with my intentions –
LUKE: You know, the wedding, the movie invite, the flowers.
LORELAI: [ Chuckles ] Luke –
LUKE: You knew what I was doing!
LORELAI: Well, no, not officially.
LUKE: Not officially? Oh, come on. I mean, I didn’t have a ref present, but other than that.
LORELAI: Well, you didn’t say anything official.
LUKE: What was I supposed to say? I did things. I let my actions speak. That’s what you’re supposed to do. Your supposed to let your actions speak. That’s the romantic way to do this, damn it.
LORELAI: Okay, you’re right. I’m sorry.
LUKE: And you went along with all of it. So naturally, I assumed we were on the same page, and then your boyfriend shows up here at the inn that I invested in.
LORELAI: Whoa, what boyfriend? Are you talking about Jason?
LUKE: No, Tom. Yes, Jason.
LORELAI: You guys were talking? What did he say?
LUKE: He said you were together. I mean, I was sitting there listening to this guy spout on and on about how it’s right, you’re right, he’s right. The whole time, I’m thinking, “What the hell have I been doing all this for? She’s taken.” [Storms out the front door – Lorelai follows]
LORELAI: I — I’m not taken! We broke up!
LUKE: Well, he doesn’t know that!
LORELAI: Well, just calm down!
LUKE: Aw, I don’t want to calm down! I did everything right! I did exactly what the book said!
LORELAI: The book?!
LUKE: I thought we were on track, and now you’re standing there looking at me like I’m crazy.
LORELAI: I’m not looking at you like you’re crazy!
LUKE: You know the last time I bought flowers for someone? Never! That’s when! Very easy stat to remember!
LORELAI: I loved the flowers!
LUKE: And then when I walked you home after the wedding, there was a moment. I thought there was a moment.
LORELAI: There was! There was a moment. [Luke gazes at Lorelai, then moves closer.]
LORELAI: What are you doing?
LUKE: Will you just stand still?
[He gathers her in his arms and they kiss. Lorelai pulls away then moves back closer to Luke.]
LUKE: What are you doing?
LORELAI: Will you just stand still?
[She holds his face as she kisses him. Luke’s arms wrap around her as they kiss. She pulls away again. As they gaze at each other, Luke grasps her waist and pulls her back.]
This was the moment we had all been waiting for. At the end of season five, we then see Lorelai ask Luke to marry her and he says yes. Before this, they did break up but got back together. The next bump in the road is in season six when Luke finds out he had a daughter and pushes Lorelai away. In the last episode of season six, Lorelai gives Luke a ultmatim: Elope and get married, or don’t get married at all. Luke says no so Lorelai walks away and ends up going to Christopher’s and sleeping with him.
For most of season seven Luke and Lorelai are not speaking but in the last ever episode of Gilmore Girls we see them reunited after Lorelai learns that it was Luke that planned the going away party for Rory.
The next couple that I have come to love is Rory and Logan. We first met Logan in season 5 when Marty and Rory bumped into him at the coffee cart. We then see him later when him and Rory have a debate and why she doesn’t like him. We then get to know him better when Rory writes a story for the Yale Daily News about the Yale secret society ‘The Life and Death Brigade’.
They finally start a no string relationship at the renewal vows of Rory’s grandparents. After doing this for about a month, Rory decides to finish it with Logan, but:
YALE DORMS – LOGAN’S COMMON ROOM
[Logan is sitting, reading the paper. There is a knock on his door. He gets
up. It’s Rory.]
LOGAN: Well, this is a surprise.
RORY: Can I come in?
LOGAN: Sure. You want to sit down?
RORY: Nope. Got to stay vertical.
[Logan stares at her.]
LOGAN: You have, like, an octagon imprinted on your face.
RORY: I can’t do this anymore Logan.
LOGAN: Do what?
RORY: This casual dating thing. I don’t like it. It’s not who I am and I
don’t want to make it who I am.
LOGAN: Whoa, hold on here. Where’s this coming from?
RORY: It’s coming from me. The ravishing creature standing in front of you.
LOGAN: We talked about this.
RORY: I know.
LOGAN: I didn’t make you do this.
RORY: I know. I’m not accusing you of anything. This isn’t your fault.
LOGAN: I don’t understand. I thought everything was going so well.
RORY: What are you talking about? I haven’t heard from you in a week.
LOGAN: I was busy. I had some friends in town, and –
RORY: You know what? It doesn’t matter. You’re not my boyfriend, you don’t
owe me any explanations. I just don’t want to be one of the many anymore.
LOGAN: Oh, Rory, come on!
[Logan’s roommate comes out.]
LANNY: Hey, Logan, Cassandra’s on the phone.
LOGAN: Take a message.
LANNY: She’s got a great accent. Where’s she from?
LOGAN: Lanny! Message!
LANNY: Fine. Relax, man. Geez.
[He goes back into his room.]
RORY: Go call Cassandra back. We’re done here.
LOGAN: How are we done here?
RORY: I said everything I have to say.
LOGAN: Which is what?
RORY: I’m a girlfriend girl, Logan. I have boyfriends, not escorts.
LOGAN: Ah. [He starts pacing.]
RORY: I thought I could be different, but I can’t. I’m sorry. Maybe we can
just go back to being friends again.
LOGAN [mad]: Or maybe we can become boyfriend and girlfriend, right?
LOGAN: I get it. I get what you’re doing.
RORY: I’m not doing anything.
LOGAN: Hey, if that’s what you want then just come out and say it. But you
coming in here and issuing an ultimatum –
RORY: I am not issuing an ultimatum!
LOGAN: That’s not what I heard.
RORY: I said let’s be friends!
LOGAN: That’s not what you meant!
RORY [moans]: I need a taco!
LOGAN [crosses over to her]: All right, fine. I’ll do it.
RORY: Do what?
LOGAN: I’ll be your boyfriend.
RORY: You can’t be my boyfriend.
LOGAN: Why not?
RORY: Because you told me that you can’t be my boyfriend.
LOGAN: If I say I can, then I can.
RORY: You have a hundred girls on speed dial. You keep a second bathrobe in
your closet for overnight guests.
LOGAN: That’s all beside the point. You came in here to say you were unhappy
with the situation, right?
LOGAN: Fine. I’ve rectified the situation. Problem solved.
RORY: No. Problem not solved.
LOGAN: Hey. If I say I can do this, I can do this!
[There is a knock at the door. Logan opens it.]
GIRL: Hey Logan. Thought maybe I could get you to buy me some lunch.
LOGAN: Oh, geez –
RORY: I’m sorry. Could you excuse us for just a second? We’re almost done
GIRL: Sure. I’ll just wait out here.
[Logan closes the door.]
RORY: So the Swedish flight attendants should be here any minute.
LOGAN: I swear this situation has never happened to me before in my life.
RORY: Logan –
LOGAN: Rory. Do you really want to stop seeing me?
RORY: No, but I can’t –
LOGAN: ‘Cause I don’t want to stop seeing you.
RORY: Okay, but –
LOGAN: So then just accept what I’m saying. I like trying new things. It’s
new, it’s different, but I can do it.
RORY: Are you sure?
[Logan grabs her and kisses her.]
RORY: Well, I know you can do that, but –
[He kisses her again.]
RORY: I really want to believe you.
LOGAN: Then believe me. We’re starting fresh right now, new beginning. So
you want to go grab some lunch? We’ll hammer out the details.
RORY: I should probably change first.
LOGAN: Go home, change. I’ll pick you up in half an hour.
RORY [smiles]: Okay.
[They kiss and laugh.]
It is in this episode where they finally become a couple. They get along fine until season six when Jess comes back into the picture. He has been writing a book and Logan is a total arse so they have a fight and Logan leaves her in the pub on her own. They are apart for a while and Rory only finds out that they have broken up through Logan’s sister Honor phones her to say sorry about the bad news. A few days later, Logan come crawling back asking for forgiveness.
After finally getting her back he screws it up again by not telling her that he has slept with his sisters whole wedding party, and let her walk in there and listen to them talk about how they have all been with him. They fight and Rory storms off telling him not to be at the apartment between 1 and 4 the next day so she can get her stuff. Later that night, Logan is once again asking for forgiveness and he gets it easier this time but has Rory really forgiven him?
It’s not untill after his accident while taking part in a Life and Death Brigade event that made her realise that she had really forgiven him and loved him so much.
After Logan’s graduation, he was made to move to London for a year. While in London Rory and Logan’s relationship remained strong and Rory lived in the apartment that they shared. Logan came back after a business deal went wrong and started to push Rory away. He went for a drunken weekend away with Finn and Colin to Las Vegas and when he got back realised what a mistake it was to push Logan away and told her he was sorry and that he had left his father’s business behind and was going out on his own.
Rory and Logan where strong and at Rory’s graduation party Logan proposed to Rory and she told him she had to think about it. At her graduation Rory told Logan that she was not ready for marriage and that they should have a long distance relationship but Logan saw this as going backwards and didn’t want this. So he told Rory it was all or nothing. She just wasnt ready to get married. So they went their separate ways.
If it was up to me Rory would have said yes and they would have lived happy ever after but that is never the way.
So there you go there is so much more I could write about this show but I think I will write more posts on Gilmore Girls as it has come to be part of my everyday life.
